In a thrilling match at the Utilita Bowl, Manchester Originals’ opener, Laura Wolvaardt, showcased a batting masterclass to secure a six-wicket victory over Southern Brave, the defending champions. Wolvaardt’s unbeaten 78 not out proved to be the decisive factor as she timed the chase perfectly, leading her team to the target with just two balls to spare.
The Brave, who have now suffered three consecutive losses, were left reeling by Wolvaardt’s stunning performance. She forged a crucial 80-run partnership with Eve Jones, who contributed 39 runs, to set the stage for the victory after Brave posted a total of 136 for 5. Danni Wyatt was the top scorer for the hosts with a gritty 61 off 46 balls, while Sophie Ecclestone played a key role with the ball, picking up 2 wickets for 17 runs.
The match began with Wyatt and Maia Bouchier giving Brave a strong start, putting on 51 runs in just 35 balls. However, Kim Garth’s breakthrough by dismissing Bouchier shifted the momentum, and Ecclestone further dented Brave’s innings by taking two quick wickets. Wolvaardt’s remarkable catch further leveled the playing field at the halfway mark.
Despite Lauren Cheatle dismissing Beth Mooney early on, Wolvaardt and Jones took charge of the chase. Wolvaardt showcased her batting prowess with 11 boundaries in her brisk innings, while Jones provided valuable support before falling to Adams. Ecclestone’s brief cameo, culminating in a six, added impetus to the chase as Wolvaardt remained unbeaten to secure the victory.
Reflecting on her match-winning performance, Wolvaardt commented, “It’s nice to chase a big score and it will be good for our group. I didn’t get off to the start that I wanted… I felt like I wasn’t getting the boundaries I wanted but I knew we had the firepower so I just tried to take it deep. Eve was amazing… she really played to her strengths.”
With this victory, the Manchester Originals have notched up their second win of the tournament, leaving Southern Brave’s title defense in jeopardy. The Brave will be looking to regroup and bounce back in the upcoming matches as the competition heats up in The Hundred.
