In a thrilling London Derby at Lord’s, the Oval Invincibles and the London Spirit battled it out in front of a packed crowd of 17,810 fans. The match ended in a tie, with both teams scoring 113 runs in their allotted overs.
The game was filled with excitement and drama, with overseas all-rounders Marizanne Kapp and Deepti Sharma putting on impressive performances for their respective teams. Kapp starred for the Invincibles, taking 4 wickets for just 11 runs and scoring a quickfire 47 with the bat. On the other hand, Deepti shone for the Spirit, claiming 3 wickets for 18 runs and scoring 44 runs.
Speaking after the match, Kapp expressed her disappointment at getting out at a crucial moment, saying, “It was good up until I got out: it cost us the game so I’m very disappointed. The plan was to stay in there and take it as deep as possible. We knew they were going to bowl their best bowlers, so I was just trying to knock it around.”
The game started with the Oval Invincibles captain, Lauren Winfield-Hill, electing to bowl first. Kapp made an immediate impact, dismissing Meg Lanning early in the innings. Despite a fightback from Cordelia Griffith and Georgia Redmayne, Kapp continued to pick up wickets at crucial junctures.
In response, the London Spirit lost both their openers early on, with Chamari Athapaththu and Winfield-Hill falling to the bowling of Tara Norris and Eva Gray. Kapp led the Invincibles’ charge with a brilliant knock of 47 runs, supported by Alice Capsey.
However, Deepti had other plans and picked up key wickets to keep the Spirit in the game. Dean’s stunning catch to dismiss Paige Scholfield and Deepti’s bowling exploits put pressure on the Invincibles as they needed 32 runs from 32 balls with 6 wickets in hand.
The match went down to the wire, with the Spirit needing 2 runs off the final ball to win. Unfortunately for them, a brilliant run-out by Charlie Dean sealed the tie for the Invincibles, much to the disappointment of the Spirit players and fans.
Overall, it was a thrilling encounter filled with twists and turns, showcasing the talent and competitiveness of both teams. The Hundred continues to deliver exciting Cricket matches, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the last ball is bowled.
