In a thrilling encounter in Dublin, Ireland managed to secure a narrow seven-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second T20I, leveling the two-match series at 1-1. Gaby Lewis was the star of the show for the hosts, smashing a sensational century and receiving valuable support from Orla Prendergast.
The action-packed match saw Ireland batting first after losing Amy Hunter early in the powerplay. However, Lewis rose to the occasion and took charge of the innings. Partnering with Prendergast, the pair forged a brilliant 119-run partnership for the second wicket, with Lewis doing the bulk of the scoring with 78 off 49 balls.
Lewis reached her half-century off 40 balls and continued to accelerate with Prendergast as they approached the halfway mark. The duo found success against the Sri Lankan bowlers with Lewis reaching her second T20I century in the 19th over, finishing with an emotional 119 off 75 balls, including 17 fours and two sixes. Their efforts helped Ireland post a challenging total of 173 for 3.
In response, Sri Lanka faltered early on but saw Harshitha Samarawickrama lead a spirited fightback. She showcased her prowess with a blazing 65 off 44 balls, laying the foundation for a chase. Joined by Kavisha Dilhari, the pair added crucial runs to keep Sri Lanka in the hunt.
Despite Dilhari’s valiant efforts, Sri Lanka fell short towards the end, requiring 16 runs off the final over. Dilhari managed to reach her well-deserved half-century but couldn’t find the boundary when it mattered most, as Sri Lanka finished on 166 for 7, seven runs short of the target.
Speaking after the match, Ireland’s star performer Gaby Lewis expressed her joy at the team’s victory, stating, “It was a special feeling to contribute to the team’s success today. I am thrilled with my performance and grateful for the support from my teammates.”
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Harshitha Samarawickrama reflected on her innings, saying, “It was disappointing to fall short today, but I am proud of the fight we showed. Hopefully, we can bounce back in the next series and continue to improve.”
With the series now level, both teams will look to bring their A-game in the decider, promising another exciting showdown between Ireland and Sri Lanka.
