In what proved to be a thrilling encounter at Sophia Gardens, Andy Gorvin and Ben Kellaway put on a bowling masterclass to secure a memorable victory for Glamorgan over Yorkshire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
The match saw Glamorgan post a competitive total of 230 for 9, thanks in large part to a resilient 66 from former Yorkshire player Billy Root. Root’s innings, along with a crucial 56-run partnership with Timm van der Gugten for the ninth wicket, helped propel Glamorgan past the 200-run mark.
Despite a strong spin attack from Yorkshire’s Dom Bess and Dan Moriarty, who combined for 3 wickets apiece, Glamorgan managed to set a challenging target for their opponents.
In response, Yorkshire got off to a shaky start, losing early wickets to van der Gugten and finding themselves at 11 for 3. Skipper Jonny Tattersall steadied the ship with a composed 51, but a flurry of wickets from Gorvin, including key dismissals of Tattersall and Matt Revis, put Yorkshire on the back foot.
As the required run rate climbed, Bess tried to accelerate the scoring but fell to Kellaway’s clever bowling. The tail-end resistance from Yorkshire was quickly dismantled by Kellaway and Gorvin, as the Vikings were bowled out for 168.
Speaking after the match, Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson praised his team’s efforts, saying, “It was a fantastic team performance. Everyone contributed in some way and it’s great to come away with the win.”
Meanwhile, Yorkshire skipper Joe Root rued his team’s missed opportunities, stating, “We didn’t execute our plans as well as we would have liked. Credit to Glamorgan, they played well and deserved the victory.”
The result sees Glamorgan secure a home semi-final spot in the tournament, with hopes high for a successful campaign as they aim to replicate their 2021 championship-winning form.
