In a thrilling match that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Southern Brave fell just short of their target after a dramatic collapse saw three wickets fall in seven balls, ultimately derailing their chase against the Oval Invincibles. The Invincibles, posting a total of 147 for 9, managed to defend their score and clinch the victory despite a valiant effort from the Brave who ended at 130 for 7.
Saqib Mahmood emerged as the hero for the Invincibles, putting aside two years of injury setbacks to deliver a match-winning performance at Lord’s. His spell of reverse-swing bowling proved to be the turning point of the match as he dismantled the Brave’s middle order by dismissing Leus du Plooy, Kieron Pollard, and Laurie Evans in quick succession, finishing with figures of 3 for 17 in seven balls.
“It’s been a real team effort throughout, probably even better than last year… Your career goes past very quickly and these are the nights to really remember and cherish, as a group of mates as much as colleagues. Winning trophies is what it’s all about,” said Sam Billings, the captain of the victorious Invincibles.
The Invincibles, now back-to-back champions, have established themselves as the dominant force in The Hundred, showcasing a well-balanced squad led by Billings and coach Tom Moody. With players like Will Jacks and the Curran brothers contributing significantly to their success, the Invincibles have only lost three games over the last two seasons.
As for Mahmood, his outstanding performance in the final not only secured the title for his team but also served as a timely reminder of his capabilities to England selectors. With Australia set to tour in September, Mahmood’s form could earn him a recall to the national team after a hiatus since March 2023.
The match at Lord’s also highlighted the Invincibles’ formidable spin attack, led by Adam Zampa, Nathan Sowter, and Will Jacks who collectively took 34 wickets throughout the season. Zampa’s early breakthrough, combined with Jacks’ crucial dismissal of James Vince, set the tone for the Invincibles’ victory despite a late surge from the Brave’s batsmen.
In the end, a mini-collapse during the Brave’s chase, triggered by Mahmood and followed by a flurry of wickets from Mills and Hosein, sealed the fate of the match. While Sam Curran and Jordan Cox provided some hope with a partnership, the Brave ultimately fell short of the target, paving the way for the Invincibles to celebrate another successful campaign in The Hundred.
