• Odds - Displays pre-match odds from selected bookmakers.

There are multitudes of ways to bet on football. Here are some of the most common.

• Overall result: This is a straight bet on the outcome of a match, although it is more complicated than in some sports because of the possibility of a draw.

• BTTS (both teams to score) and number of corners: These are very popular amongst football bettors. Although the number of corners might sound like anybody's guess, the both teams to score can be determined from how often have both teams been scoring in their previous matches.

• Match result and number of goals: This is a variation on this and is a bet on the exact result of the match. Alternatively, a punter can try and predict how many goals might be scored in a match. It is worth remembering, though, that football is a low scoring game, and the possibility exists of it being a nil-nil draw.
  A variation on this is to predict the score at half-time.

• First goalscorer: As the name suggests, this is a bet on either the first goalscorer in a match, or the first person to score for either team.
  More difficult bets include predicting when the first goal in a match might be scored.

• Exotic bets: There are numerous more exotic bets that can be considered. For example, some books offer odds on the number of cards – red and yellow – that will be shown by a match official in the course of a game.
  Others will give players the chance to bet on whether there will be a penalty awarded, the number of throw-ins and corners, and even how much injury time will be played.
  In fact, almost everything that can and will happen in a football match can be bet on by somebody, somewhere.
  However, these types of bets should be reserved for those who either know what they are doing, or have money to spare.

The odds which sports betting operators offer will usually be in one of three formats. As a caveat, it is worth noting that, whilst the higher the odds, the greater the potential pay-out, the greater likelihood that the bet will fail. There is a good reason why there are few poor bookmakers.

• Fractional odds: Sometimes known as the British system, this expresses the odds as the ratio of the potential amount to be won in relation to the original amount staked.

When betting on soccer, there are also some initial factors to consider. What competition are the teams playing in, for example? In some leagues, like the Premier League, for example, almost every match is closely contested, and, on a given day, any team can beat another.
There are other leagues, however, where one or several teams dominate. For example Bayern Munich have dominated the Bundesliga for the past several years, the Portuguese league is almost always one by one of the Big Three sides, and the same applies to Spain.
That is not to say that these teams cannot lose, but, statistically, it is less likely. When predicting the winner, we look at the following factors :

• Position in the table and form: A team's position in the table is an overall guide to their form across a season, but recent results should be checked as well to determine how they are playing now. They might have made a bad start to the season and have since recovered, or mentally decided that the campaign is over, and they have nothing to play for now.

• Home advantage: Home advantage can also be a big benefit to some teams. Although all pitches are theoretically the same side, in practice teams can vary this to suit their style of play, making them narrower, wider, or longer. And they can also vary the length of grass.
  Add to that a hostile group of home fans, and some venues can be particularly intimidating.
  There are teams that just do not travel well, and, if there are great distances involved, they may be tired even before they arrive.

• The elements: The weather can also have a decisive role to play, especially if it is inclement. A team that likes to play a passing brand of football may find it tough going in the wind and rain, especially if the surface begins to cut up, and the ball does not travel freely over the surface.

• Injuries and suspensions: Although football is a team game, most sides have a few players whose absence from the starting line-up can adversely affect them. That is why it is important to check who may be suspended or is not available for a match because of injury.
  Consider how good their replacements are, and how much will their absence mean that a team has to change its style of play and approach.
